Cape Kennedy
- Cause of death
- Killed by regulation
Florida legislated the older name back onto its own maps and the US Board on Geographic Names followed.
Six days after the assassination, Lyndon Johnson announced in a televised address that Cape Canaveral would carry Kennedy's name, and the federal map-makers obliged within the month. Floridians never took to it. The state legislature voted to restore the original name and the US Board on Geographic Names agreed on 9 October 1973, giving Cape Kennedy a run of just under ten years. The space centre next door, which is what Johnson's executive order actually renamed, kept its name and still has it.
