Aereo suspended operations on 28 June 2014, three days after the Supreme Court ruled that its service infringed broadcasters' copyrights.

Aereo routed broadcast television to subscribers over the internet and argued it was merely renting them equipment, which is why it owed the broadcasters nothing. The Supreme Court decided it was functionally a cable company. Three days later, at 11:30 in the morning, chief executive Chet Kanojia told subscribers he was pausing operations and that the journey was far from done. The journey reached Chapter 11 on 21 November 2014.
