Omegle's permanent shutdown on 8 November 2023 was a term negotiated in the settlement of a child sexual abuse lawsuit.

Omegle spent fourteen years pairing strangers at random for one-on-one video chats, which went roughly as well as that description predicts. It closed on 8 November 2023, one week after settling a 22 million dollar suit brought by a woman groomed on the site when she was eleven. Her lawyer confirmed the permanent shutdown was the negotiated price of avoiding a jury verdict. Founder Leif K-Brooks, who launched it at 18, thanked her by her initials in the farewell note.
