Cause of death
Killed by lawsuit
Made by
Escape Media Group

Grooveshark shut down immediately on 30 April 2015 as a term of its copyright settlement with Universal, Sony and Warner.

Grooveshark's model was letting users upload whatever they liked and streaming it back to everyone else, free, which Universal, Sony and Warner took to court. On the eve of trial, with up to 736 million dollars in damages on the table, Escape Media agreed to pay 50 million and switch the service off the same day. The farewell note left in its place opened, entirely without irony, with the words Dear music fans.
