Emirates dropped an order for 39 aircraft in February 2019, leaving Airbus without enough demand to keep the production line open.

Airbus spent an estimated 25 billion dollars on a double-decker built for a hub-and-spoke future that never arrived, and never earned it back. It sold 251. Emirates took 123 of them, then traded its remaining order for 40 A330-900s and 30 A350-900s, which ended the argument. The last A380 was handed over in Hamburg on 16 December 2021, fourteen years and two months after the first one carried passengers.
