The WMO retires any storm name attached to a disaster too deadly for the name to be reused.

Atlantic hurricane names rotate on a six-year cycle, so a name normally comes back around forever. The exception is a storm so destructive that reusing the name would be insensitive, at which point the WMO's hurricane committee strikes it permanently. Katrina was retired in spring 2006 alongside Dennis, Rita, Stan and Wilma, the largest single retirement in the list's history. The replacement name is Katia.
