Chrysler announced at the end of 1999 that it would discontinue Plymouth and move its models to the Chrysler and Dodge brands.

Plymouth was launched in 1928 to sell Chryslers to people who could not afford Chryslers, and finished its 74-year run selling Dodges to people who would not buy Dodges. The formal announcement came at the end of 1999; the Prowler and Voyager went to Chrysler, the Neon went to Dodge. The last Plymouth, a silver 2001 Neon LX with a five-speed manual, was built at Belvidere on 28 June 2001 and bought by a Chrysler vice president for his own collection.
