Rdio filed for bankruptcy and sold its assets to Pandora, which could not keep the service running because the record label licences did not transfer with the sale.
Founded by Skype's Janus Friis and launched in 2010, Rdio was the streaming service critics adored and consumers ignored. It filed for bankruptcy in November 2015 and sold its assets to Pandora for $75 million, but label licences do not transfer in an acquisition, so Pandora had bought the engineering team and not the right to keep the lights on. Rdio emailed subscribers its goodbye and switched off worldwide at 8PM ET on 22 December 2015, about five years after launch.
