Six Flags closed AstroWorld after its final night on October 30, 2005 in order to cut corporate debt by selling the land underneath it.
Former Houston mayor Roy Hofheinz opened AstroWorld beside the Astrodome on June 1, 1968, on roughly 116 acres he had raised with 600,000 cubic yards of hauled dirt. Six Flags bought the park in 1975 and ran it for thirty more seasons before concluding the dirt was worth more than the rides, citing corporate debt, declining attendance and rising property values. It closed at the end of its thirty-seventh season and was dismantled within months. The land had been valued as high as $150 million and sold for $77 million.
