GM's November 2018 restructuring idled the Detroit-Hamtramck plant and discontinued the Volt with it.

GM spent an estimated $900 million to prove a plug-in hybrid could work, then built almost 160,000 of them and stopped. The Volt was briefly the best-selling plug-in vehicle in America, in 2012 and 2013, before buyers moved to crossovers and to fully electric rivals including the Tesla Model 3 and GM's own Bolt EV. Condemned in a November 2018 restructuring, it then ended two weeks early to match slow demand: the final car left Detroit-Hamtramck on 15 February 2019, eight years and two months after a retired airline pilot in New Jersey took delivery of the first one.
