Leningrad, as a city name

Lasted

about 67 years

1924  →  1991

Cause of death
Killed by one executive

The name was retired in 1991 when the city's pre-revolutionary name, Saint Petersburg, was officially restored during the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The city was renamed Petrograd in 1914 and Leningrad in 1924, immediately after Lenin's death. The Soviet name lasted 67 years and went out with the system that issued it, the old imperial name returning in 1991 along with the original names of streets, squares and monuments. The surrounding region is still Leningrad Oblast, so the name outlived the city it was made for.

Replaced by St. Petersburg.
