Mercury

Lasted

about 73 years

1938  →  4 January 2011

Cause of death
Killed by indifference
Made by
Ford Motor Company

Ford announced on 2 June 2010 that it would stop building Mercury after years of declining sales.

Mercury spent 72 years occupying the narrow gap between a Ford that was slightly too plain and a Lincoln that was slightly too expensive, and eventually the gap closed. Ford made it official on 2 June 2010, blaming years of declining sales, and planned to wind production down in the fourth quarter. Fleet orders dragged it into the new year: the last Mercury, a Grand Marquis, cleared final assembly at St. Thomas on 4 January 2011.
