Willis Group Holdings took the naming rights as part of an office lease and the tower was rebranded.

Sears built the tallest building in the world to house itself, and the name outlived the company's reason for building it. On 16 July 2009 the mayor of Chicago pulled a black cover off a lobby sign reading Willis Tower, a London insurance broker having picked up the naming rights along with its office space. The building was 110 storeys and thirty-six years old, and Chicagoans have spent every year since declining to use the new name.
