Studebaker left the car business and closed its last assembly plant, in Hamilton, Ontario, putting around 700 people out of work.

Studebaker was founded in 1852 to build wagons, added electric cars in 1902 and gasoline cars in 1904, and so was older than most of the industry that outlived it. South Bend stopped building cars on 20 December 1963, leaving one plant in Hamilton, Ontario doing the work of a national automaker. It closed on 17 March 1966 and took roughly 700 jobs with it, ending 114 years of vehicle manufacturing.
