Volkswagen ended Type 1 production at Puebla on 30 July 2003 after the car's market had shrunk to a single country.

A war delayed it, the British occupation restarted it, and 21,529,464 of them were built afterwards. Japanese imports took the Beetle's customers through the late 1970s, and from 1988 the classic car was sold only in Mexico. Volkswagen closed the Puebla line on 30 July 2003 with a 3,000-unit Ultima Edicion in Aquarius Blue or Harvest Moon Beige, which is a very dignified way of admitting the run is over.
