Apple confirmed it was discontinuing the AirPort base stations on 26 April 2018, five years after the last hardware update.

Apple sold Wi-Fi to normal people in 1999 with the AirPort, a base station that worked at a time when almost nothing else did. Then it stopped updating the Express in 2012 and the Extreme and Time Capsule in 2013, reassigned the engineering team in 2016, and confirmed the discontinuation on 26 April 2018 with stock sold off while supplies lasted. By then every broadband customer got a router free in the box, which is a difficult price to beat.
