Apple could no longer source the parts, and the phone in everyone's pocket had absorbed the job anyway.
The Classic was the last iPod with a spinning hard drive and a click wheel, and by the end it was the only way to carry a very large music library in your pocket. Apple removed it from the store the day it announced the Apple Watch, without ceremony. Tim Cook later explained the parts were simply no longer available and redesigning it was not worth doing.
