Facebook took its two remaining strongholds and Google redirected the effort into Google+.

Orkut launched the same month as Facebook and lost the English-speaking world quickly, but it became genuinely dominant in Brazil and India for years. Google eventually conceded the category and closed it to concentrate on Google+, which then outlived Orkut by less than five years. It is one of the rare products killed by a successor that died first.
