Saab filed for bankruptcy on 19 December 2011 after General Motors blocked a Chinese consortium from completing its purchase of the company.

An aircraft company launched its first production car in 1949 and spent six decades building aerodynamic oddities for drivers who liked the ignition key between the seats. Spyker bought Saab from General Motors in February 2010 and spent 2011 hunting Chinese money to keep it alive. GM refused to license its technology to a Chinese-controlled owner, which chief executive Victor Muller called the last nail in the coffin. NEVS later bought the estate, but never the name.
